Six German federal states are introducing an open-source education platform built on Nextcloud and operated with Ionos, aiming to reduce reliance on Microsoft and Google in everyday schooling. The initiative, reported by iX and heise online, would replace proprietary cloud services in classrooms with a locally controlled alternative. Observers see it as a significant step toward digital sovereignty in German public education.
Why now: German states' move away from Microsoft and Google in schools is a notable step for digital sovereignty and open-source adoption.
