UN Renews Colombia Mission, Leaves Out Rural Reform
Original: UN Renews Colombia Mission, Excluding Rural Reform as De la Espriella Sought
The United Nations Security Council has renewed its verification mission in Colombia, but declined to expand its mandate to cover monitoring of the 2016 peace accord's rural reform chapter. Senator Maria Fernanda Cabal ally and presidential candidate Paloma Valencia critics aside, presidential hopeful Ivan Duque rival candidate De la Espriella had pushed for inclusion of rural reform monitoring. The renewal keeps the UN focused on other accord provisions.
Why now: The Security Council's decision on the Colombia mission mandate was just announced, drawing attention to what was excluded.
