Brazil has produced a roadmap setting out the first global timetable for transitioning away from fossil fuels, a move with major implications for international climate negotiations. As a major oil producer and host of upcoming UN climate talks, Brazil's proposal puts a concrete timeline behind commitments made at COP28 to move away from coal, oil and gas, and is drawing attention from governments and climate observers worldwide.
Why now: Brazil's proposal is the first to give a concrete global timetable for phasing out fossil fuels, a highly contested issue in climate negotiations.
