Google is turning off its Search service entirely in schools that opt out of its AI features, according to a report by The Verge. Students in institutions that reject the company's AI tools will instead see notices telling them Search is unavailable. Critics are calling the move coercive, arguing it pressures schools into accepting AI rather than offering a genuine choice, and it is drawing comparisons to other controversial platform decisions.
Why now: The bundling of AI with a core service like Search forces schools into an all-or-nothing choice, sparking debate about user consent.
