Original: Dr. Adam Hamawy, a former US Army combat surgeon, has won New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District, defeating Republican
Dr. Adam Hamawy, a former US Army combat surgeon and plastic surgeon who volunteered in Gaza, has won New Jersey's 12th Congressional District, defeating Republican Gregg Mele, according to an Associated Press projection. Hamawy earlier secured the Democratic nomination for the seat and now heads to Congress.
Why now: His unusual background as a combat surgeon and volunteer in Gaza makes the win notable in the context of heightened interest in Gaza-related politics.
