Xavier Becerra elected California's first Mexican-American governor
Original: gobernador de california
Xavier Becerra, son of Mexican immigrants, has won the California governorship, becoming the first Mexican-American to hold the office. Spanish-language media in Mexico and the United States are highlighting the result as a historic milestone, noting that two Latinos simultaneously won governorships in California and Texas. Commentators describe his appeal to working families, and former Biden administration officials have praised his record, though coverage also mentions ongoing criticism of racism in US politics.
Why now: Mexican media are closely following the election of a Mexican-American candidate to one of the most powerful governorships in the United States.
