The Protection Cluster, the UN-coordinated body for civilian protection in humanitarian crises, has issued an alert concerning El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state in Sudan. The alert signals concern for the safety of civilians in a city that has been at the centre of fighting and access restrictions during Sudan's conflict. Further details of the specific protection risks have not yet been made widely available.
Why now: Sudan's conflict has made El Obeid a focal point for humanitarian concern, and new alerts on civilian protection draw urgent attention.
