Original: Democrat Rob Sand wins election to become Iowa governor, AP projects
Democrat Rob Sand has won election as governor of Iowa, according to an Associated Press projection. The state auditor's victory hands Democrats a notable win in a state that had trended Republican in recent years, ending a stretch of GOP control of the governor's office. Details on the margin and his incoming administration are still emerging.
Why now: An upset Democratic gubernatorial win in a Republican-leaning state has immediate national political significance.
