A report published in the Taipei Times on 1 July 2019 suggests the number of pigs lost to African swine fever in China could be twice as high as the officially stated toll. The claim, shared widely online including by former Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt, has fuelled doubts about the accuracy of Beijing's disease reporting and raised questions about the true scale of the outbreak affecting the world's largest pork industry.
Why now: Concerns are mounting that China is underreporting the spread of African swine fever, with major implications for global pork markets.
