A new investigation reports that the EU border agency Frontex has been complicit in the forced return of asylum-seekers intercepted in the Mediterranean to Libya and Tunisia, despite documented abuses faced by returnees there. Critics say the findings point to EU cooperation with North African partners at the expense of asylum rights, and the revelations are renewing calls for accountability and scrutiny of Frontex operations.
Why now: Fresh investigative reporting alleging EU border agency involvement in illegal pushbacks is drawing attention to Frontex accountability.
