Call For Pacific Fisheries To Adopt Biodegradable Fish Aggregating Devices
Original: Pacific Fisheries Should Commit To Biodegradable Fish Aggregating Devices
Pacific fisheries are being urged to commit to biodegradable fish aggregating devices, which are used to attract tuna but often end up as ocean debris. Advocates argue that switching from plastic and netting materials to naturally degrading designs would reduce marine pollution and harm to reefs and wildlife across the region. The debate centers on how quickly the regional fisheries management bodies should require the transition.
Why now: Concern over plastic pollution and ghost gear from tuna fishing in the Pacific is driving calls for mandatory biodegradable gear.
