Who Are the Ainu People?

Original: Who Are The Ainu People? Inside The Rich History And Culture Of The East Asian Indigenous Group By Ella Spitz | Edited B

A new explainer profiles the Ainu, the indigenous people of northern Japan and southeastern Russia. The Ainu lived as hunter-gatherers across the region for centuries before waves of forced assimilation under Japanese rule nearly erased their language and traditions. The piece revisits their history and culture at a time of renewed interest in indigenous rights and recognition in Japan.

Why now: Growing public interest in indigenous history and Japan's treatment of the Ainu is driving attention to cultural explainers like this one.
