How useful is the iPhone's variable aperture really?
Original: How useful is a variable aperture on the new iPhone anyway?
Photography commentators are debating the value of the variable aperture in Apple's latest iPhone. The feature lets the camera physically adjust its aperture, something usually reserved for professional lenses, but the discussion centres on whether everyday users will notice any real benefit. Photographers are weighing its effect on depth of field and low-light shots against Apple's computational photography, which already simulates similar results in software.
Why now: The new iPhone's variable aperture is a rare hardware change in smartphone cameras, prompting debate over whether it delivers real photographic benefits.
