Ethiopia's church forests framed as a spiritual inheritance
Original: Ethiopia's church forests taught me to honour an inheritance
Ethiopia's church forests — pockets of old-growth woodland preserved around Orthodox church grounds for centuries — are being described as an inheritance to be honoured, in a reflection published by the World Council of Churches. The piece connects the forests' ecological value to their sacred role, arguing that caring for them is both a religious duty and an environmental one.
Why now: Interest in faith-based conservation is growing, and Ethiopia's church forests are a rare example of religion successfully protecting biodiversity.
