Terahertz Imaging Could Reveal Hidden Medieval Texts
Original: Terahertz Imaging Could Reveal Medieval Texts Hidden in Book Bindings | Newswise
Researchers are exploring terahertz imaging as a way to read medieval manuscripts hidden inside the bindings of old books. In the medieval era, pages from older manuscripts were often reused as binding material, sealing their texts away unseen. Terahertz radiation can penetrate layers without damaging them, potentially recovering these lost writings. The technique offers archivists a non-invasive method to uncover centuries-old texts.
Why now: It combines new imaging technology with the tantalising prospect of recovering lost medieval writings from existing library collections.
