Israeli President to Begin Talks on Next Government
Original: Israel’s President Will Start Talks on Whether Netanyahu or Eisenkot Can Form a Government
Israel's president is set to open consultations on whether Benjamin Netanyahu or former military chief Gadi Eisenkot has the best chance of forming a governing coalition. The talks follow an election that left neither bloc with a clear path to a majority of 61 seats in parliament. The president's decision on whom to task with forming a government will shape whether Netanyahu returns to power with his right-wing and religious allies or an opposition bloc led by figures including Eisenkot takes over.
Why now: Israel held an election without a clear winner, and the president's consultations will determine which leader gets the first chance to form a coalition.
