Google gives Ai2 $5M to build AI climate projection tool
Original: Ai2 gets $5M from Google to turn AI weather model into a tool for projecting climate change
The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Ai2) has received $5 million from Google to adapt its AI-based weather model into a tool for projecting climate change. The funding will support turning short-range weather forecasting technology into a system capable of longer-term climate projections, an area where traditional climate models are computationally expensive. The grant highlights growing interest in using machine learning to speed up climate science.
Why now: The new Google funding for AI-driven climate modelling is a notable development at the intersection of tech and climate research.
