Democratic election upsets could reshape Texas immigration enforcement
Original: Democratic election upsets could reshape Texas’ expanding local immigration enforcement program
Recent Democratic victories in local Texas elections could alter the state's expanding program of local immigration enforcement, in which county and municipal authorities cooperate with federal immigration officials. The upsets may bring in leaders less willing to participate in such agreements, potentially slowing or reversing the program's growth in key jurisdictions. Observers are watching to see how newly elected officials handle existing enforcement partnerships.
Why now: Fresh election results raise questions about the future direction of immigration enforcement cooperation in Texas localities.
