Endangered black-footed ferrets depend entirely on prairie dogs
Original: Without prairie dogs, endangered black-footed ferrets disappear
Conservation reporting highlights that black-footed ferrets, one of North America's most endangered mammals, cannot survive without prairie dogs, which provide both their main food source and the burrows they live in. As prairie dog colonies shrink due to habitat loss, disease and poisoning campaigns, ferret recovery efforts are directly threatened, drawing attention to the need to protect the species they depend on.
Why now: New coverage of the ferret's dependence on declining prairie dog populations has renewed attention on threats to both species
