Original: Mathurin Romegas, who died OTD in 1581, was made a rival Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller https:// cromwell-intl.
Mathurin Romegas, one of the most celebrated knights of the Order of St John, died on this day in 1581. During the Great Siege of Malta in 1565 he became famous for his daring raids on Ottoman shipping. The order later split over leadership, and Romegas was named a rival Grand Master by a faction opposed to the elected Grand Master Jean de la Cassiere, amid disputes with Pope Gregory XIII.
Why now: It is the anniversary of his death, prompting history posts about his unusual contested Grand Mastership.
