Kagi criticizes Google's AI requirement for school search access
Original: For anyone who has been following Google's announcement that they are going to disable search for schools if they don't
Google has announced it will disable its search service for schools unless they agree to enable AI overviews and AI chat features for students, according to a widely shared post. Kagi, the paid search engine company, has published a rebuttal arguing that education should not be held for ransom, framing Google's move as coercive toward schools.
Why now: Google tying continued search access for schools to mandatory AI features is seen as controversial, prompting pushback from competitors and educators.
