Chicago voters back return of gunshot detection technology
Original: Chicago voters back return of gunshot detection technology as Mayor Brandon Johnson prepares to test possible ShotSpotter replacement
A new poll shows most Chicago voters support bringing back the city's gunshot detection system, known as ShotSpotter, while Mayor Brandon Johnson prepares to trial a possible replacement. The technology was phased out under Johnson's administration amid criticism over cost and concerns about its accuracy and impact on communities of color. The findings put public opinion at odds with the mayor's approach as debate continues over how best to detect and respond to gun violence in the city.
Why now: Public opinion is shifting against the mayor's decision to end the technology as he moves to test an alternative
