Sydney Live Music Series Evicted to Make Way for Padel Courts
Original: Sydney Live Music Series Booted for Padel Courts: ‘Shows How Little Value Is Placed on Cultural Spaces’
A live music series in Sydney is being forced out of its venue, which is being converted into padel courts, the fast-growing racquet sport. Organisers and supporters say the move shows how little value is placed on cultural spaces, arguing that established music events are being displaced by sports and leisure developments. The decision has sparked criticism about the prioritisation of commercial sporting facilities over community arts venues.
Why now: The displacement of a cultural event by trendy padel courts has struck a nerve in debates about Sydney's shrinking music venues.
