Bluetooth's next audio upgrade will skip older devices
Original: Bluetooth’s next big audio upgrade is coming, but not to your current devices Standardizing lossless and high-res audio.
Bluetooth is standardizing lossless and high-resolution wireless audio in its next major update. The new High Data Throughput capability should allow headphones and speakers to receive CD-quality and hi-res sound without cables. However, the feature will require new hardware, meaning people's current phones and earbuds will not be able to access the upgrade through a software update.
Why now: Lossless Bluetooth audio has long been a missing feature, and news that it requires new hardware affects buying decisions.
