European far-right politicians on Wednesday began distancing themselves from Donald Trump after the Democrats' victory in the US midterm elections, according to Reuters. Notably, most stopped short of directly criticising the president, instead quietly shifting their tone. The muted response highlights how the US result has unsettled populist leaders in Europe who had aligned themselves closely with Trump and his political style.
Why now: The Democratic win in the US midterms prompted European far-right figures to reassess their public association with Trump.
