Democrats Claim Enough States to Nullify Electoral College

Original: Democrats Win Enough Seats Nationwide to End Electoral College

The New Republic reports that enough state legislatures and governorships have flipped Democratic to pass the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. Under the compact, participating states pledge their electoral votes to the national popular vote winner, effectively bypassing the Electoral College once states totaling 270 electoral votes join. The claim is drawing attention to debate over how US presidents are elected.

Why now: The claim that the compact has reached the threshold to decide presidential elections by popular vote is highly contentious and politically charged.
