Germany's country-code top-level domain .de marks its 40th anniversary. More than 18 million .de domains are now registered, with individual addresses selling for millions of euros in the past — nearly two million euros were reportedly paid for shopping.de. Industry observers note that apps and artificial intelligence are changing how people use and share web addresses, raising questions about the domain's future role.
Why now: The 40th anniversary of .de is prompting reflection on Germany's digital identity and how apps and AI may reduce reliance on traditional domain names.
