Original: Funding forensic science is essential to keeping New Mexico’s justice system working
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety is pressing for sustained funding of forensic science, arguing it is essential to keeping the state's justice system functioning. Forensic labs process evidence for criminal investigations and trials, and shortfalls in staffing or equipment can delay cases. Officials say investment in this work underpins fair and timely outcomes for courts across New Mexico.
Why now: Budget discussions and case backlogs have put forensic lab funding in the spotlight.
