Tom Kim chases Asian Games gold and military exemption
Original: In search of military service exemption, Tom Kim two shots off lead at Asian Games
Golfer Tom Kim is two shots off the lead at the Asian Games, where a gold medal would earn him an exemption from mandatory military service in South Korea. The stakes give added weight to his performance, as South Korean men must typically serve in the military by their late twenties, a requirement that can disrupt professional sports careers.
Why now: His performance carries major personal stakes, since winning gold would exempt him from South Korea's mandatory military service.
