Wildlife officials kill 14 food-conditioned bears near Bozeman
Original: Wildlife officials kill 14 food-conditioned bears gathering at a home near Bozeman
Montana wildlife officials have killed 14 bears that had become food-conditioned after repeatedly gathering at a home near Bozeman. Authorities said the animals had lost their natural wariness of people and posed a safety risk, prompting the decision to destroy the entire group. The large-scale removal has drawn attention to how unsecured food sources around homes can lead to deadly outcomes for bears, and to calls for better attractant management in the region.
Why now: The unusually large number of bears killed in a single incident has sparked public debate over wildlife management practices.
