Brazil's patron saint becomes an election issue and a court dispute
Original: Brazil’s patron saint becomes an election issue and a court dispute
Our Lady of Aparecida, Brazil's patron saint, has been drawn into the country's electoral politics, with the veneration of the Virgin Mary at the centre of both campaign arguments and litigation before the courts. The dispute adds a religious dimension to an already heated election season, raising questions about the limits of political use of religious symbols.
Why now: Religious symbols are being contested in the courts during Brazil's election campaign.
