Rights groups turn to UN over ICE detainee location secrecy

Original: Human rights groups ask UN panel to help end ICE’s effort to hide locations of detainees

Human rights organizations are petitioning a United Nations panel to intervene against US Immigration and Customs Enforcement's practice of concealing where detainees are being held. The groups argue the secrecy prevents families and attorneys from locating people in custody and violates international human rights standards. The appeal seeks UN pressure to force transparency about detention locations.

Why now: Renewed scrutiny of ICE detention practices has made detainee transparency a pressing human rights concern
