Elon Musk has been appointed to a US warfare taskforce, according to reports circulating alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's address to junior officers and enlisted leaders. In that speech, Hegseth publicly declared a cultural shift in the American military. The appointment pairs the world's richest man with the Pentagon's leadership at a time of sweeping defence reform talk, and observers are weighing what Musk's role could mean for military procurement, technology and strategy.
Why now: News of a high-profile tech billionaire taking a formal defence role, combined with Hegseth's announced military cultural shift, is generating fresh debate about the direction of US defence policy.
