Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says he has transformed the U.S. military, framing the changes around culture war flashpoints. NPR reports he made the claim in an address to troops, leaning into divisive social and political issues rather than purely operational matters. The remarks are drawing attention as an unusually politicized message from the Pentagon's leadership.

Why now: The defense secretary is openly tying military policy to culture war issues, which is contentious and newsworthy.
