US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has confirmed plans to cut 20% of the US military's generals and admirals, a sweeping reduction of the armed forces' senior leadership. The move is drawing attention over its potential impact on military command structure and morale.

Why now: A major restructuring of top US military leadership by the defense secretary is naturally contentious and newsworthy.
