Hegseth purges senior military leadership in sweeping reshuffle

Original: 'Clowns out, cowboys in,' says Hegseth as a fifth of generals and admirals are fired

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed roughly a fifth of America's generals and admirals, declaring 'Clowns out, cowboys in' as he reshapes senior military leadership. The mass removal of top officers is drawing attention over concerns about politicisation of the armed forces and the scale of turnover at the Pentagon's highest ranks.

Why now: The unusually large purge of senior US military officers has sparked debate over political loyalty tests in the armed forces.
