Scientists say the limited availability of water on the Moon could restrict how many people can live there, setting a natural ceiling on any future lunar settlement. Water is essential for drinking, growing food and producing fuel and oxygen, and supplies delivered from Earth or extracted from lunar ice are expected to remain scarce for the foreseeable future.
Why now: Renewed interest in lunar bases and long-term Moon habitation has put a spotlight on the practical limits of sustaining people there.
