Claim circulates that thieves in Rome are marked with red paint
Original: Gypsies who steal in Rome are marked with red paint so that tourists know. Italians want tourists, not criminal invaders
A claim spreading among Italian social media users says Roma people who steal in Rome are being marked with red paint to warn tourists, framed with anti-immigrant rhetoric that Italians 'want tourists, not criminal invaders'. No official confirmation of such markings has been reported, and the story is circulating amid heightened debate in Italy over crime, tourism and anti-Roma sentiment.
Why now: It taps into ongoing Italian tensions over street crime, tourism and hostility toward Roma communities.
