Original: A Cold War Spy Satellite Named After Farrah Fawcett Just Blew Apart in Orbit
An American Cold War-era reconnaissance satellite has broken apart in orbit, generating a new field of space debris. The spacecraft, reportedly nicknamed after actress Farrah Fawcett, was part of a classified satellite program from decades past. Observers are discussing the event amid growing concern over orbital debris and the risks fragmentation events pose to other satellites and crewed missions.
Why now: The break-up of an old spy satellite adds fresh debris to orbit at a time of heightened concern about space junk and satellite collisions.
