Montana wildlife agency euthanizes 14 food-conditioned black bears
Original: Montana wildlife agency euthanizes 14 black bears after finding them ‘extremely food conditioned’
Montana's wildlife agency has euthanized 14 black bears after determining they were 'extremely food conditioned,' meaning the animals had learned to seek out human food sources and posed a safety risk to people. Such measures are typically taken when bears repeatedly raid garbage, campsites or homes and cannot be safely relocated, drawing attention to how human food waste endangers wildlife.
Why now: The large number of bears killed in one action has drawn public attention to wildlife management and the role of human food waste in bear deaths.
