Statue of ex-president Felipe Calderón decapitated by Mexican protesters
Original: Statue of former president and launcher of the "drug war" Felipe Calderón decapitated by protesters from the Mexican Uni
Protesters from the Mexican Union of Electricians decapitated a statue of former president Felipe Calderón. The union holds a long-standing grievance against Calderón, whose 2009 liquidation of the state electricity company Luz y Fuerza del Centro cost thousands of electricians their jobs. Calderón, president from 2006 to 2012, also launched the militarised 'drug war' blamed for years of spiralling violence in Mexico.
Why now: The act targets a divisive former president over both the drug war and the destruction of the electricians' union, making it a flashpoint of protest.
