El Niño wildfires devastate Indonesia's orangutan population
Original: ‘The toll is huge’: El Niño-driven wildfires overwhelm Indonesia’s orangutan population
Wildfires driven by El Niño conditions are sweeping through Indonesian forests, inflicting what conservationists describe as a huge toll on orangutan populations. The fires destroy vital habitat, kill and injure orangutans, and displace survivors into smaller, fragmented areas of forest, compounding the pressure on an already endangered species.
Why now: El Niño-linked wildfires in Indonesia are causing severe harm to endangered orangutans, prompting concern for their survival.
