White House moves to build national license plate database
Original: White House builds license plate database
The White House is reported to be developing a national database of license plates, a step that would let federal authorities track vehicle movements across the country. Critics are raising alarm over mass surveillance and the lack of clear safeguards, while supporters argue it could help with law enforcement, border security and locating stolen vehicles.
Why now: Privacy and civil liberties concerns about government vehicle tracking have sparked wide debate.
