ICEYE and Nokia partner on sovereign LEO satellite communications

Original: Finnish ICEYE and Nokia are partnering to develop secure, sovereign low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication system

Finnish companies ICEYE and Nokia are teaming up to develop a secure, sovereign low Earth orbit satellite communication system aimed at government users, including defense and emergency services. The system would rely on European technology, with first launches expected in 2028. The partnership reflects growing European interest in independent space-based communications infrastructure amid security concerns.

Why now: European strategic autonomy and sovereign communications have become pressing topics given security tensions and reliance on non-European satellite networks.
