Freed prisoners thank Andy Burnham as early releases begin
Original: 'Thank you Andy Burnham' - prisoners praise PM as they are freed early from jail https://www.standard.co.uk/news/politic
Prisoners released early under government measures to ease jail overcrowding have publicly thanked Andy Burnham, with some reportedly calling him prime minister. The early release scheme in England has drawn criticism as well as gratitude, since it frees inmates before their sentences end to relieve pressure on prisons. Commenters are debating whether the policy is a necessary fix or a sign of a justice system in crisis.
Why now: Early prisoner releases are politically sensitive, and the unusual praise for Burnham has fuelled debate about overcrowding and his political standing.
