Animal welfare groups fault Utah mink farm bird flu response
Original: Animal welfare groups criticize response to bird flu outbreak at Utah mink farm
Animal welfare organizations are criticizing how authorities and farm operators handled a bird flu outbreak at a mink farm in Utah. The groups argue the response to the H5N1 outbreak, which forced the culling of thousands of mink, was inadequate and raised concerns about how such outbreaks are monitored. Critics say the case highlights risks of viral spread on fur farms.
Why now: The outbreak renewed concerns that mink farms could serve as a reservoir for bird flu mutating toward humans.
