Valentine Lawford: the hidden hand behind Britain's wartime diplomacy
Original: Valentine Lawford, the hidden hand behind Britain’s wartime diplomacy
British diplomat Valentine Lawford is being remembered as a key but little-known figure in Britain's wartime diplomacy. A long essay argues that Lawford, who served in senior diplomatic roles during and after the Second World War, shaped policy and negotiations far beyond what his public profile suggested, prompting renewed interest in his career and influence on British foreign policy.
Why now: A new profile has drawn attention to a largely forgotten diplomat whose behind-the-scenes role in wartime diplomacy is seen as under-appreciated.
