Japan's defense minister calls for reviewing all nuclear options
Original: Nuclear arms, nuclear subs: Japan’s defense minister wants every option on the table
Japan's defense minister said the country should keep every option on the table when it comes to nuclear weapons and nuclear-powered submarines, signaling a potential shift in Japan's long-standing stance against acquiring such capabilities. The remarks come amid growing regional security concerns, and debate is expected over how far Japan should go given its pacifist constitution and the legacy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Why now: It would mark a dramatic break from Japan's postwar nuclear taboo at a time of rising regional tensions.
