Original: Petition: An Abandoned Net Killed a Three-Month-Old Monk Seal. Nobody Had to Be Watching It. https://www. onegreenplanet
A three-month-old Hawaiian monk seal was found dead after becoming entangled in an abandoned lay net in Hawaiian waters. A petition is calling for measures to address derelict fishing nets, arguing the death was preventable. Conservationists are using the case to push for stronger action on discarded fishing gear, which poses a serious threat to the critically endangered monk seal population.
Why now: The preventable death of an endangered monk seal pup has sparked a petition urging action on abandoned fishing nets.
