Robots approaching from behind seem to move faster, study finds
Original: Robots approaching from behind are perceived as moving faster, experiments reveal
New experiments suggest people perceive robots approaching from behind as moving faster than they actually are. The findings could matter for the design of robots that operate around humans, such as delivery or service machines, since designers may need to account for how people judge speed and risk from robots approaching unseen from the rear.
Why now: It offers fresh insight into human-robot interaction, a growing concern as robots share more public spaces with people.
